Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy:
Q. What kinds of problems do you help with?
A. I help people (adults, teens and children) with anxiety and trauma. I especially enjoy working with children who have seen other providers and not yet seen improvement, children and teens with “difficult to diagnose” problems, adults and teens who want to process difficult life experiences or traumatic events, and those who have been to therapy before but would like to try EMDR or art therapy as a different technique.
Q. How long should I expect me or my child to be in counseling?
A. Since each person is different, it’s difficult to predict how long therapy might take before I meet you (or your child). Once I get to know you (or your child) through a couple of sessions, I can offer a potential timeline of how long therapy may take. However, one of the reasons I became certified in EMDR therapy is that it is proven to offer faster results for treating anxiety and trauma when compared with traditional talk therapy.
Q. How much does therapy cost?
A. I’m happy to share my fees for therapy in our free phone consultation.
Q. Do you take my insurance?
A. I am not contracted with insurance companies but you may be able to receive reimbursement from your insurance company for me as an out of network provider. You may also be able to pay for therapy with a flexible spending account, and/or have your therapy fees contribute towards your annual deductible. I recommend you call your insurance company to ask about mental health coverage for out of network providers.
Q. Do you recommend medication?
A. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am unable to offer an opinion on medication. However, if I think that medication may support your treatment, I can offer a recommendation for a psychiatrist to assess your needs and make that determination.
Q. How do I know therapy will work?
A. One of the most important aspects of therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. This is why I offer a free phone consultation so we can get to know one another a little before our first appointment. We will determine together what your goals (or your child’s goals) are for therapy, and make sure to check in frequently about whether or not therapy is helping you to meet those goals. I have also become certified in EMDR therapy and am a board certified art therapist, specifically to offer additional therapeutic strategies to support my clients. I find that when combined with my other training, most clients are able to get the help they need and meet their treatment goals.
